The question "soldiers should obey illegal orders" ultimately boils down to "should soldiers shoot and kill opponents of the regime when the pretend dictator commands them to do so?" Whether they realize it or not, these people are arguing the regime should be allowed to kill political opponents.

Every Democrat in Congress should put out a video saying troops have an obligation to refuse unlawful orders. Make them prosecute all of you. This isn't a close call. I'd add Republicans too if I thought any of them had the courage to actually cross Trump on this.

also I simply do not think this is a conversation that plays well for them in public, because it naturally gravitates towards "what do you mean by illegal orders" and then people start worrying about what "obey literally any order" actually means
