I don't think anyone owes critics any response. I think most of the time it's a bad idea for anyone to engage with their critics. It's almost impossible to do so in a way that doesn't elevate the critic. Frankly, I don't think most critics deserve to be put on the same level as those they criticize.

Whenever I think about social media I think about this video by @innuendostudios.bsky.social. On previous accounts randos would regularly pop up in my mentions demanding I "respond to criticism". I always felt like they were demonstrating a sense of entitlement that I found confusing and irritating.

I literally just re-watched Forever Knight like a month ago. It's cheesy and melodramatic by modern standards and of course it's full-on copaganda but it's also genuinely one of the best pieces of modern vampire fiction and it inspired a lot of what came after it.

I am speaking from direct personal experience as someone who waited far too long to come out because I let fear and a sense of obligation to others consume me. I am begging others to avoid making the same mistakes.

At some point after you finally come out you will eventually realize that nothing you lost by living as your authentic queer self was actually worth having for the price you would have had to pay to keep it.

Circumstances will never be perfect or completely safe and a time when everyone will accept your true queer self will never come. The fear will never just go away. Waiting won't change anything. The only way out is to push past the fear and accept that you will lose something.

Many baby queers assume if they wait and stay closeted for long enough then eventually they'll be able to come out and live openly without being afraid or losing anything. They get really mad and defensive whenever someone tells them otherwise.
