Everything doesn’t have to suck is so simple and powerful. And yet so many in the political class are beholden to people who want them to message that yes things suck but they’ll suck worse if we try and make them suck less.

Resist this urge to lash yourself to a party or politician and then spend your precious energy that could be used to create movements and democratic change refusing to critique the places and people you support. That’s being in a cult and it will only make conditions worse.

I always have people reaching out to ask what I think about some politician who’s saying the right things and my answer is always that they’re going to have to earn my trust over time. I believe the Singal incident was responsible for creating a parallel pseudo-moderation body within Bluesky. Signal never got real traction bc core trans users said ensured he didn't. They did it using informal tactics - blocking, but also harassing and mobbing perceived anti-trans actors.

This informal pseudo-moderation structure was developed in response to a catastrophic loss of trust in Bluesky's moderation team and their decisions. Trans users felt their safety wasn't prioritized by the mods, so they developed alternative means to do the job they wanted from the moderation team.
