but it's not the whole truth. (most) cis people don't walk around constantly "feeling" like a man/woman. being a man/woman is just a fact for them the way it's a fact that their eyes are brown or blue. but trans people are expected to defend a dissertation on why they really "are" a man/woman.

so trans people, who already deal with medical systems designed to deny them healthcare, do the best they can to help cis people understand it. "some people need hormones because they feel like a different gender than the one they were assigned at birth" is a decent shorthand.

but it's so difficult to explain that second option to a cis person, because they hear it and think "yeah, puberty was uncomfortable for me too." and it's true! puberty sucks even if it's the right one! but the right kind of puberty sucks differently in a way that's difficult to articulate.

maybe you figure it out. maybe you're 14 years old and standing in the shower and thinking "get them off me get them off me get them off me" about the boobs you're now growing. or maybe your brain finds ways to protect you from that discomfort. maybe you simply stop recognizing yourself.
