I've done the number crunching and looked at the occupational maps of Labour's 100 most marginal seats. It's all about carers, retail workers, managers, salespeople, logistics, tradespeople, teachers.... And yet our politics of work is about one or two "hero" classes and occupations.

Ashcroft's methodology is, to put it mildly, non-standard. He asks respondents to rate their likelihood of voting for each party, and assigns their vote to the party with the highest likelihood provided that likelihood is over 50%. His results don't really match other, standard VI polling...

I'm now clinically fed up with post-by-election analysis telling Labour that it has to choose between middle-class cosmopolitan liberals (Gorton) and the white working class (Denton). This is cobblers because it's based on the misconception that there is only one ideological dimension.

Deluded. Labour lost about ten points during the course of the 2024 campaign. A strategic triumph it was not.

The closer to the (geographical) heart of England, the weaker the county identity. Wonder whether these county identities correlate negatively with English identity. PS I opposed Rutland's secession at the time, and its inability to stump up a reliable survey sample has only reinforced my view.
