Man comes to the US from Lebanon. Starts out delivering pizzas, becomes a Nobel winning neuroscientist. Trump freezes his funding, he gets an email from China offering to move his lab “any city, any university I want" with guaranteed funding for 20 years. What are we doing?

America cannot long remain free, nor first among nations, if it becomes the kind of place where universities are dismantled because they don't align politically with the current head of the government.

I realize that as a retired professor I have a responsibility to say more on this than I have. International students are essential to the fiscal bottom line of almost every university. This is an unambiguous attempt to destroy Harvard—permanently. And he won’t stop with Harvard. This is madness.

As a Harvard international graduate student… I’m sad. And scared. Really scared.

Because I have opened a BlueSky window and am procrastinating on reading final papers, let me also share what this spring has been like from my corner of the academic world.

From @hsph.harvard.edu on Instagram. In FY 25, 46% of the school's budget came from federal grants. Thinking of the many friends I have at Harvard Chan right now who just want to do work that will make the world healthier.

This is not the kind of damage a future administration will be able to undo with some supportive legislation here, a big funding bill there. One cannot undo this disaster by reversing these measures any more than one can rebuild a bombed out city by stopping the bombs and restoring electrical power.

My first post here brings lovely news: just heard that all of my NIH and NSF grants were officially terminated today. Have been expecting this for some time, but still jarring to see the news. Have heard similar news from dozens of colleagues. Will be hard, but we'll find a way forward.
