I understand these calls for action, but sometimes they come across as ingenuine and focused on a product. I want you to make artwork because you have something to say, to explore, something to release. not because "weird" is a commodity fetish. there's a lot of unloved weird right now.

the horror stories of artists getting fucked by companies that promise the world and deliver on shit. Even "well-established" names have done this to people. I research *every* company that contacts me as we all should. To have someone berate an artist for researching them is just bad form. -

Asking for the name of the company someone is contacting you from when trying to hire you, is the most BASIC of information and shouldn't be withheld. If it is, this is a HUGE red flag. And asking for payment upfront, from a company you don't know is not only ok, but recommended. We've all read -

Important point about the BSKY policy update. And I think fantasy/war gaming artists are going to have to question this move, because there's a lot of dark art out there meant to elicit responses and critiques to non-con violence as both a subject generally, or as cornerstones of world building.

What we're seeing in the "don't sign up for protests" discourse is what Paulo Freire described as the convert's failure to trust the knowledge of the oppressed. As the convert tries to stand in solidarity with the oppressed, they refuse to let go of a world where they were the authority by default.

I don't think it's overdramatic to say that we must consider whether we want "working artist" to be a viable prospect in the near future, and how to materially protect the field from corporations, execs, and managers all too happy to automate creative production with AI.

Corporate clients often deem AI-generated art "good enough"—especially when it won't be public-facing and thus subject to backlash. As such, artists describe dramatic reductions in work over the last two years, an influx of gigs fixing AI output for less money, and vanished jobs altogether.

These are largely freelance and precarious workers, and the further erosion of their income and working conditions might not show up in macroeconomic data. But we must consider how artists are losing meaningful income and support to automated systems that have, cruelly, been trained on their work.

One of the chief problems corporations have with using AI for enterprise automation software is that it isn't accurate or reliable enough to replace many tasks and jobs. This isn't an issue management tends to have with creative content, especially visual art or design.

This is the third installment in the AI Killed My Job series, after tech workers and translators. It focuses on visual artists, illustrators, and graphic designers. I received so many submissions from visual artists that I couldn't include them all, and, just a word of warning, some are very bleak.
