I would say the mechanical hammer I see most over-applied is advantage/disadvantage. (The what and why of that is a whole other thread, if folks are interested in that)

Something I've been thinking a lot about in TTRPG design and theory lately is what I'll call "New Hammer Syndrome". A system becomes popular, and an under-pinning concept becomes the new "hammer" that turns all of TTRPGs into a certain kind of nail.

I wrote this comic 2 years ago. I was terrified when I wrote it but had hope it wouldn't come to pass and would be a reminder of how bad things got before we pulled back. It not only has, it has gotten even worse. This is absolutely terrifying and will destroy lives if passed.

Been workin' on some stuff. Announced today for Starfinder Second Edition: the Secrets of the Swarm Hardcover Adventure Path! Releasing in September 2026. I can't share the secrets, but I can share the cover!

All I know is that the written word reshapes my relationship to the world nearly every day. Each time I read something new, a game, non-fiction, a poem, it has a coin-toss chance of changing me forever. It has this power. It is magic. And to argue against it is foolish and a waste of time.

Consistency is actually a major factor I consider when describing a TTRPG quality. I wrote about that and the other factors here: thoughtcrimegames.beehiiv.com/p/delivering...

What I'm trying to stress is that my personal experience of fun is not the true arbiter of whether a TTRPG is quality or not. So much of the experience of fun comes down to my connection to the setting, people I am playing with, the cognitive fit of the rules with my brain, etc.

Randomly: an old school fantasy game that doesn't get enough love IMO is Palladium Fantasy. The Palladium system had a lot of wonkiness in its various implementations (insert a Mega Damage joke here please!) but it just *worked* in Palladium Fantasy.

For others who might be confused to my meaning: the word I should probably use is "reification", which is treating something abstract as if it is real. In this context, applying a character's background to the number makes the number fictionally "real" in many contexts.
