As the launch of my X-Men zines preorder draws near, I'll remind you that you can currently get a pack of 3 of film zines at my shop. They have handmade covers & are 60+ pages. A Scream zine, lesbian vampire zine, and Hitchcock zine. They are good! I have good takes usually. sara-century.square.site

Full offense, but we shouldn't have to stop, hold your hand, and say, "That was a sad choice, wasn't it? Can you help think of a better one?" when writing for adults

Sadly exactly what they intended Watching the escalating behaviors as a very specific set of people , continually remove context and refuse to be clear about what’s happening For a myriad of reasons That ultimately boil down to “Other people are expendable for my comfort”

Elizabeth Taylor was in some really bizarre thrillers (complimentary), but she was also in a legit horror movie called Night Watch that somehow I just watched for the first time. It starts out standard and then it gets W I L D. I was just sitting here yelling at the screen and it upset my cats.

There was a good ten years where my whole intake of art/books/music/etc. was regional, like 2006-2016 my frame of reference is all local to Denver. So to this day people are like "did you see the Nightmare on Elm Street remake they did back in the day" and I'm scandalized like WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN?!

My biggest takeaway so far working through the Claremont run is that if you are familiar with the X-Men via other media properties like the movies, the old animated series, various video games etc, you are not prepared for the level of space opera derangement it contains.

I understand why people watch a superhero movie and dismiss all superheroes as "lone cowboy with bazooka saves the day" but my early understanding of showing up for a community came from superhero comics. There's fights, but Batman brings Solomon Grundy food and leaves him alone when possible, etc.

Why this works is b/c comic writers are on deadline & must give-in to their imaginations as a source of continuing story. This kind of creation is why I look to comics for inspiration more often than not. Next are the SF writers of the 50/60s & Weird Tales authors. It was just full-tilt boogie.

My first ever comic featured the Hulk, on a trip through subatomic worlds, landing on a world where WWII was being re-fought by soldiers who turn out to be giant salamanders that had been transformed by the Shaper of Worlds. He fights Captain Axis, and it ends on a cliffhanger.

Thor being turned into a frog is the kind of shit you can only get away with in a comic book, and something you will certainly never see in a MCU movie.

This is why it’s useless for weirdos like us to talk about the best comic to give to someone first. The best comic to give someone first is whatever random Bronze Age issue from the middle of a lengthy run you can find in a quarter bin.

And when comics didn't even have arcs! Those X-Men issues that weren't "Part 2 of 6" but were, like, picking up on a random story arc from 34 issues ago where Colossus befriended a sentient potato

Great point. Part of the MCU's success was how it streamlined and commodified weirdness. That's great for expanding an audience, but not great for weirdos who like weird stuff. One of my first Spider-Man comics was about Peter dying, fighting Thanos in some Purgatory, and being saved by Death.

I seriously can not overstate how much I miss this dynamic in superhero comics. DC is getting us there at least with runs like World’s Finest and Poison Ivy, but Marvel needs to get their act together. The fact Immortal X-Men and Ewing’s Guardians didn’t get 50+ issue runs literally haunts me

One of my folly projects, should I ever become a deranged billionaire and buy Marvel, is a sports drama comic about the Grapplers. Songbird, Amazon and D-Man as training staff, lead character would be Millie Collins as the luchadora Millie Mascara. Get Kyle Starks on board. Rake in Eisners.

Dazzler solo series still bangs and if you don't believe me just read the issue where she ends up in prison for murder I guess? and then is forced to wrestle with the wrestling-themed villains The Grapplers because they just happen to also be in prison.

What non-superhero fans don't understand about my love for superhero comics is that they are weird and they used to be even weirder. I don't like MCU so much. I like that comic runs used to go on for like 100 issues and the whole time I'd be like, what the Hell am I reading???
