I did a thing I've never been asked to do before: read and review a University press book being considered for publication. I was offered either $150 cash or $400 worth of books from that press. I took the books. Now I get to go shopping! I will spend a year obsessing over what to pick.

Just ordered a generous pile of paper from a nearby distributor to print and reprint some upcoming things. Assuming it arrives tomorrow I will have a new zine this week. I'll print the interior of the new zine at home today since I have what I need to make that. Excited!

The Laughing Hyenas book is just okay. Best story: John Brannon got arrested for stealing string cheese from a supermarket in Madison while they were recording "Life of Crime" with Butch Vig. For punishment, the judge made him turn in a 500 word essay on why you should not steal cheese in Madison.

A general thing I've noticed in building community with people online: Introducing other artists/people to me via email and CCing that person on the email rarely works. People introducing themselves to me directly is far more likely to result in a conversation and possibly even collaboration.

Something that recently changed my life (for the better obvs.) was getting a hot cup of Sweet Potato Atole from a little shop on 18th Street in Pilsen. Now I make it myself with slow roasted sweet potatoes at home. It is an incredible thing to drink in brutally cold Chicago winter weather. So tasty!

Lately every time I think about having sit down lunch at Joong Boo in Chicago, I get there and it’s too crowded. I do not wait in line to eat food. Today, I finally got a table and had spicy seafood tofu soup. Very little seafood in this but it still hit the spot on a frigid day.

Thrift score! $5.99 unopened ream of card stock that costs almost $32 at Office Max. Doing at least some of your printing/assembly yourself and being flexible about paper stocks/colors is a huge part of how I keep costs down and sustain my self-publishing.
