I see elsewhere on Bluesky that the discourse has turned toward telling writers not to be ashamed to admit they have day jobs or other sources of income (or spousal/family financial support), and you know what, that's 100% correct. What creates the seeming need for a "long and immersive" novel is capitalism. Esp in genre fiction, that expectation for a massive novel is tied to a) the availability of paper in the 1970s b) the amount of money publishers had to pay writers & c) a sense that "more is more." I’m back to talk about the first part of Moorcock’s ‘The Ice Schooner’ one of his 60s SFF stand-alone novels. Of course we swing it back to Doctor Who. Content Warning: We do talk about SA towards the end of the show.

When I was taking screenwriting classes back in the 90s, I was pretty sure that all my characters sounded the same. But the tutor brought in some professional actors to sight read our stuff and suddenly the two characters sounded and looked like real people. The rhythm was spot on. Magical.
