I would much rather we just find ways to take his money. We could easily introduce an extremely steep (like 80%) wealth tax on anyone who earns more than say 10M/year that includes Canadians living abroad.

Goes to show the limitations of looking at taxation in isolation from spending. Like, instituting a 25% VAT (like in Denmark and Sweden) and using it to fund an expanded welfare state would be hugely redistributive, even though on paper VAT is regressive.

The flipside of this is we still have one of the most progressive tax codes in the world. 85% of Revenue comes from just 25% of earners.

And we should pay more... but we are not ready for that conversation because it involves having more government support and initiatives.

I think there is, as ever, a nugget of truth here in that Americans feel like they *get massively less* for the taxes we pay in perceivable improvements in QOL, and the taxes we pay are paid in a way designed to be MAXIMALLY ornerous.

And the reason we get massively less for the taxes we pay is because Republicans gut everything that might provide a tangible return on investment

And one reason is the vicious circle of means testing benefits, which means fewer people get them (particularly significant taxpayers), so they demand tax cuts, which leads to tighter restrictions on programs… We’ve gotta show more taxpayers benefits.

And only about 2/3 of that is federal receipts. And most of *that* is non-discretionary. The entire federal budget anyone argues over is like 5% of total national GDP. 25 years ago we had balanced federal budgets & it wasn't even difficult!
