Oh, Dahl's a good example! I'm trying to remember, but i think Wishbone basically didn't remove much from the original stories, right? I vividly remember Frankenstein and them talking about the decayed states of the bodies he studied.

So, Wishbone very famously did not *change* any story they showed in the series, though they did abridge them rather massively to fit into very brief time slots. This meant that the Wishbone stories were some of the most accurate adaptations out there, even if it was only the signature scenes.

Watching a little terrier do a pretty Marlowe-accurate Faust was definitely an *experience*.

Oh wow, I can imagjne. I definitely remember the show, but it's a little hazier for me. My brain was thinking of the wishbone book series(found my collection recently, and stacked it with our other books of "for our kids someday.")

My library didn't have too many of them, so I think I only read like one or two of the Wishbone books before I aged out of them. But the TV show was absolutely a foundational experience for 11yo NeoTiamat.

My "I can't believe they got away with this" moment from childhood is my 2nd grade teacher reading the Illiad and the Odyssey over the school year to us. From what I remember, pretty sure she didn't censor all that much from it.

I mean, Roald Dahl was a staple of my childhood and that man could do grotesque like nobody's business. Wishbone was a national treasure. >_> It is kind of a marvel that it ever got made.

Also, did he not read books when we were kids? There were plenty of utterly goofy/gross books at basically every pont in time(I was juuuuust a hair past the age for captain underpants). There was also wishbone, which admittedly, I don't know if there's a modern equivalent(but there should be).

Pass #3 Wishbone. He's crossed multiple literary worlds. My memory is his show was on Nick over here, the internet suggests that wasn't the case in the US, but I wanted something that fit in that, without leaning on Nicktoons. (4/7)

Wishbone was my introduction to what the actual Frankenstein novel by Mary Shelley was like, as opposed to the popularized Universal movie version. I remember the actor for the "monster" actually being really good in the role, but it's been years since I last saw it.

I was absolutely not the target audience for Wishbone (though only by a literal couple of years; I was 13 when it premiered) but by gum I watched the shit out of that show. Because good dog! BOOKS!

You very much should have been, because a lot of those books are stuff studied at that age and above and that show is a great introduction to them. I remember having a geography subject introduced by a Round The Twist episode (“Smelly Feat”) when I was that age.

Oh, I mean, I know! But the show's target demographic was just not 13+ so nobody was saying "Hey, JT (& JT's peers), you should be watching this!" I just found it ENTIRELY on my own. And was relentlessly mocked for watching it in high school.

Anyway, The Monster is indignant about this and resolves he's gonna and ask his creator a stern WTF, so he sets out for Castle #Frankenstein, but on the way there he comes across an annoying preschooler playing in the woods

The Monster is kinda bitter about how things have turned out, but I guess the clothes he put on when he left had, like, a wallet in the pocket, or maybe a journal that read, "I, Victor #Frankenstein, permanent address 247 Castle Frankenstein, Geneva, am going to build a person. Wish me luck!"

(Reminds me of those notes you'd find in 2010s horror games, all "Father has changed. He used to love feeding the ducks with me at the pond. Now he spends all his time in the basement mutilating felons")

There is a heartbreaking scene where he approaches the blind patriarch of the family, wanting to be accepted and trying to smooth talk him into friendship, but the rest of the family comes home and thinks he's attacking their father and drive him away with torches, pitchforks, etc. #Frankenstein

ALSO, UNLIKE VICTOR #FRANKENSTEIN, the cottage-dwellers provide a model of happy, loving family unit, and The Monster develops a parasocial relationship with them

The Monster eventually winds up living in the shed of a cottage, unbeknownst to the nice family who lives IN the cottage. The family is a very sweet, if unobservant, little group of people, and from them The Monster learns language, and then how to read, and then to be ridiculously pretentious

Of course, he inherted his drama queen tendencies straight FROM #Frankenstein, the silly bastard
