Hiya. If you know me at all it’s bc I make roughly 35 posts a day about how much I hate AI/LLMs. This year I was a judge for the World Fantasy Award. FWIW, if any of us thought Robert Jackson Bennet used AI to write The Tainted Cup we would not have nominated it, much less awarded it best novel.

Yeah even if you “just” use it to write your back cover copy or whatever, you’re using a technology built by fascist thieves and are using it without/against the explicit wishes of the victims (and you should feel bad and be ashamed that you’d rather be lazy than ethical)

My friends, I say this with all the love in my heart: Right now might not be the moment for “But we should be TOLERANT and NUANCED about the plagiarism machines!” Your tolerance and “nuance” will be weaponised by the grifters and their apologists. Please respect yourselves more.

And this isn't just about one person. Next year some publisher who publishes Big Names may announce AI editing policy that excludes certain works, and those authors will be rightly upset. It will be EVEN MORE important to hold the line in that circumstance.

If you would think the rule was good, and would not revisit it for someone you don't really know that well, or someone you hate, you should not revisit it because it applies to someone you like. This feels like an element of fundamental fairness.

If the rule is otherwise good and someone who we all appreciate and respect has their work excluded for a year, them's the breaks.

The rule should not be chosen based on who it excludes. If the rule means that the output of an entire publishing house, which goes AI-edit forward in 2026, is excluded, the rule is functioning as intended.

2) when deciding if a clear rule is a GOOD rule, the absolute last thing you should be doing is crafting a rule and then looking to see if it excludes people you like and respect and frantically redrafting it if it does so that those people are eligible for your contest

Any work made ineligible for the Nebula Awards by them disallowing slop and slop-assisted work was never eligible in the first place. "There are legitimate uses in translation, research" If you consider 30-70% incorrect results that poison neighborhoods with new cancers "legitimate"

And someone who everyone appreciates and respects is not going to suffer from not getting an award one year. They might lose some appreciation and respect over how they react to that exclusion, however, I suppose.

I had been planning on renewing my membership, but not anymore. Any validation of slop-machine-made work completely eradicates the organization's legitimacy as an advocacy group.

I agree with this entire thread. I am deeply disappointed by @sfwa.org 's decision, especially considering how many of its members (including me) had our work stolen for the creation of that generative AI. There is NO way anyone should be eligible for a Nebula without doing ALL the writing themself.

If they're going to award Nebulas for partial LLM-created works then I want a piece of those Nebulas since my work was stolen to create them.

Never been prouder to have let my membership lapse! Every non-slopper should boycott @sfwa.org and the Nebulas until LLM users (they’re not writers) are banned from nomination. Humiliating choice, SFWA!!! do better 🤮
