It is genuinely insane what Jackson Yee does in this movie. He bounces between a character well into his 40s and a punk no older than 21 so effortlessly, both completely believable and unrecognizable from the other, to say nothing of his stint as Lon Chaney’s ghost. Fucking nuts.

Naomi Kawase’s Still The Water (2014) is a stilted, but enchanting, synergy of contrasts. Teen agonies act as unwieldy and unnatural mouthpieces than characters, spouting too-precise and poetic Palme d'Or lures, but the ensouled ocean crashing onto human mortality like a God is REALLY good stuff.

I know a lot of Tunes historians and purists deride Daffy’s shift from whacky goofball to a mean-spirited, hateful, cruel foil to Bugs, but I don’t think many characters have been anywhere near as fucking funny as the Chuck Jones version.

I truly love Andrei Tarkovsky’s conceit of “sculpting in time,” and really think Hou Hsiao-Hsien has always been one of the greatest temporal carvers. Dust in the Wind (1986) is such an easy and gentle current through so many years and so many memories not our own but SO recognizable.

A definitive quarter of a lifetime, school’s end and adulthood’s beginning to the inevitable first heartbreak and dejected return home at the wane of your 20s, done so intimately and softly. Time travel as a slow train ride through chapters of routine and unremarkable milestones.

A man who never truly outgrows being a boy so homesick he doubles over in pain. Friendships burning bright before fizzling, fragmenting, drifting away. First love learning the fallacy of soulmate daydreaming and the very real hurt and healing from separation and maturity.

This is so lived in until it isn’t, so cluttered and full of other lives and happenstances mingling together in shared experience before time gently skips ahead, ellipsis without flash or bang, and community becomes empty space and vacant shared corners.

While reputably one of Hideo Gosha’s worst films, I absolutely fucking loved Death Shadows (1986)? One of chambara’s foremost and gnarliest innovators fading into a late period of an almost archaic style stagnation, soundstages of unreal wilderness and feudal fever cast in prism glimmer and glower.

Gosha’s legacy of samurai splatter and violently creative camerawork grinds to a bafflingly traditionalist halt for most of this action, which just highlights the bizarre silk ribbon razor, the death traps, the music, the interstitial dance numbers in the game of chess between two assassin women?

In the era of Kinji Fukasaku’s jidaigeki fantasias and Akira Kurosawa’s final golden run, this moves as such a fascinating paradox of dated delirium and singular invention. Delightfully fucking weird, a beautiful last hurrah of ‘60s color spectacle instincts, and carried by the lady archenemy leads.

I just re-found this painting, which was in a kid's bible I had growing up. I used to obssess over it, and I'm pretty sure seeing Lucifer here was the first time I thought a man was attractive? Over the years I'd think "it couldn't possibly be as horny as I remember it", but I mean come ON

The Third Murder (2017) is surprisingly another example of Kore-eda the humanist slipping fully into Kore-eda the (overly?) sentimentalist. A heavy text brimming with ugly questions of mortal nature and the fallibility of justice realized as an almost naive heartache of a courtroom drama.

For something so coldly abrasive in its metallic palette and claustrophobic in its back-and-forth staredowns of struggling sociopathy and agonized empathy, realized in baleful black eyes gleaming with catchlights, it’s just got an immensely sweet heart? Koji Yakusho is disturbingly remarkable.

The anamorphic digital camerawork is GORGEOUS, of course. Looks fucking amazing.
