An entirely peaceful and seamless watch, not a single mean bone in its body. Some unbelievable humble naturalism and splendid landscape filming, all feeling as intimate and humane as the soft character work and its steadily revealed neighborhood of miles and miles and miles. An excellent dog, too!

Went into Theo Angelopoulos’ Landscape in the Mist (1988) blind, didn’t even skim a summary hook, and I’m left completely ruined. An emotional devastation of a stunningly soaked and freezing hypnotic drone that never once raises its voice. Hitchhiking to the void, odyssey to chilly nowhere.

It’s not without its kindness, but with the senseless absurdity of adulthood stripped as naked as its senseless violence and predation, this roadtrip of sibling survival renders the unfairness that defines our world as stark as the barren landscapes and miles of industrial wreckage.

Grownups huddle and stalk in the fog like the walking dead, phantoms of habit or need, every bizarre or gentle or nightmarish encounter carrying the wordless weight of SO much history and baggage. So many lives lived and lied in this miserably beautiful pace, two too sweet children hand in hand.

Loved every soothing second of Byambasuren Davaa’s The Cave of the Yellow Dog (2005). The simplest of coming of age tales, a child denied the pet they so desperately want, given so much intimacy and warm-to-the-bone life through Davaa’s documentary improv, her naturalism wrapped in a fable’s wool.

The splendor and simplicity of the day-to-day make believe of a very real Mongolian family, every babble and giggle from their children as real and unscripted as you could want, is all shepherded and nurtured by an unbelievably soft narrative hand. Hyper-realism at its most special, gently guided.

James Whale’s Frankenstein quite literally haunts a little girl’s waking moments, days of school and aimless play within a cementing regime cast in honeycomb glow.
