Garo: Demon Beast of the Midnight Sun (2006) pushes the look of the TV series fully into V-cinema hostility. Kindāve repulsive to look at in the best possible way, incredible designs and Keita Amemiyaās impeccable special effects and action planning spilling over into hectic excess.

Will you LOOK at this?? The staging and how the disparate mediums are interacting, the scattershot maximalist animation and the practical composites. PlayStation 2 game, music video, and Zeiram by way of The End of Evangelion all at once.

I find the CG in Garo so creatively fascinating. You see everything of Amemiya that you do in his practicals, the same designs and imagery that would have been puppetry or stop motion in Cyborg Ninja or Zeiram, but now rendered in abrasive CGI maximalism.

It reminds me a lot of Tsui Harkās similar turn in the aughts, and predates Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchiās use of motion capture to sculpt an unsettlingly perfectionist spin on the Showa uncanny. This is so creepy and intangible in ways so tethered to Amemiyaās creepiest practicals.

Drew a Hound of Tindalos from a short story by Frank Belknap Long, released in a short story collection of his work in 1946. The hounds are creatures that exist outside of time and space. They can emerge in the form of smoke from any angle of a certain sharpness, like the corner of a room.

The Cadaverās Tale~ Some concept designs I did for the animated cadaver & props/keyframe from
@realgdt.bsky.social
incredible FRANKENSTEIN! Also collaborating with Mike Hill who sculpted and made the puppet (and puppeteered it to life) with the final screen performance digitally augmented by MRXFX!

incredible FRANKENSTEIN! Always a wonderful collaboration with Guillermo and the amazing Mike Hill, working over in-progress body sculpt pics & trying different head/ jaw designs (originally a screaming skull in early concept)!

I keep coming back to this one. I know itās an unloved Tsui, but I find the timely CG maximalism so fascinating, rich in its uncanny edge, and the way it all interacts with the environment and with the same frantic energy of the practicals and martial arts⦠itās just insane?

Warner Bros.: Okay, Michael. You're going on a press tour for Batman Returns. During interviews, try to promote the movie a bit and ensure that people know it's gonna be the big hit of the summer. A real crowd-pleaser. Got it? Michael Keaton:

Martin Scorsese has been an invaluable force in an industry that has, since its inception, been utterly callous in its disregard for its own artists. Scorsese learned about what happened to Georges Méliès and vowed to not let it continue. His work as an archivist and advocate are unparalleled.

Bit the bullet and dived into Keita Amemiyaās Garo. Its zeitgeist aesthetic loudly speaks for itself, Kamen Riderās goth alley tryst with Devil May Cry. Inarguably sick nā slick, incredible designs and scene stagings. Seeing Amemiyaās practicals experiment with CG like this is so creative and rich?

Familiar Heisei tokusatsu stylings and pacing in service of an actually quite dark and gruesome Demon Of The Week spookiness. Pretty phenomenal lo-fi J-horror in every episode, nasty and brutal stuff even before our Dante/Virgil Batman stomps his Square Enix boots into view and transforms.

Hajime Satoās Golden Bat (1966) is fucking incredible. A missing link between Warning from Space (1956) and Ishinomoriās Kamen Rider, Japanās own crack at FantĆ“mas as a time-looped Atlantean mummy who rises from slumber to cackle and throw violent hands with aliens, mutants, and alien mutants.

Iām becoming well acquainted with Shaw Bros batshittery, but Bastard Swordsman (1983) is a picture perfect precipice of that batshit. Compelling characters with genuine arcs are sent sailing in some of the most gonzo stunts and fights Iāve ever seen in this genre.

Itās nothing short of sorcery, this stuff. Clockwork harmony between stuntmen, choreographers, and special effects artists. The mind races as to how you even come up with some of this, much less shoot and edit any of it? Fucking bananas and shenanigans.
