Transformers Telephone lasted from 1986 to 1992, ending with Operation Combination. I’ve heard Japanese fans say they knew Transformers was really over when they called, and Optimus didn’t answer. Transformers telephone did return eventually for multiple series, like Beast Wars and Car Robots.

The Licca-Chan phone line was so popular, Takara applied the model to everything else. Takara created similar phone lines for G.I. Joe, Henshin Cyborg, Microman, Diaclone, Brave, G.I. Joe again, Gridman, and of course Transformers. Transformers telephone even used the voice actors from the cartoon.

It. Has. Not. Ended. You can still call Licca TODAY. At 58 years and counting, Licca-chan talking about her day, is an unbroken continuity, which beats the absolute shit out of Transformers. However, that doesn’t mean Transformers wasn’t able to benefit from Licca-chan Phone.

Takara had to do something, so they gave Licca her own phone number. Absolutely free, kids could call the special number, and hear a short pre-recorded message from Licca, rotated out every couple weeks. This started in October 1968, and lasted until… wanna guess when it ended?

But ask yourself, if a kid got to speak to their favorite character on the phone, do you think they’d just call once? Would they tell their friends? What about everyone at school? Little girls wanting to speak to Licca quickly became the majority of Takara’s calls, overwhelming their phone system.
