On the other side, if the Republicans were to collapse, the Dems would find themselves as a right wing party against and increasingly explicitly socialist voter pool. The ensuing chaos within the Dem party would damage the comfort of the establishment. Easier to keep the Republicans propped up.

The powerful members of the Democratic party have nothing to gain from beating the Republicans, let alone crushing them. Their best bet is getting just enough people elected to get close to power without actually achieving it. Keep the dream alive for voters, deliver for their donors. Win-win.
