The Walton family (who own Walmart) are worth over $400 billion, yet many of their employees are on SNAP. Bezos is worth over $400 billion, many Amazon employees require SNAP. The people who need help are not the problem. It’s corporate greed. It’s an unwillingness to pay a living wage.

What we're witnessing with

is ultra rare in the history of known hurricanes in the Atlantic. This level of sustained intensity and feasting on every joule of ocean heat content without any real disruption is incredible. Not hyperbole: Jamaica is facing a generational catastrophic event.

Having missed the first 4 Celtics games of this season, it just hit me how busy I have been lately. Glad to see the 1st win and (more importantly, I must add), Luka Garza and Josh Minott breakout game?

Guillermo del Toro on wealth: "a wealthy man is a man who has enough, not a man that needs more. If you have enough to invite someone for a beer? You're rich. If you have a yacht, planes, islands, and you still need more? You're not rich."

Up late on the weekend watching The Martian and reminded of the sense of optimism we used to have about cooperation and endurance and human achievement. Honestly, even if the science is a mess, it was really nice to watch two hours of people problem solving with something resembling facts.

Imagine being 17, your little brother by your side, begging to speak to your dad as he’s dragged away. You may never see him again. And this is every day. Soul shattering, nightmarish stuff, never to be forgiven.

The three cultures I know of that linked performance of masculinity with ability to fire off poetic verse are: Viking, Samurai, and late 20th century African American urban poor. All produced aesthetics people find fascinating, and all had a really high murder rate. Not sure what to make of this. 🤷🏽

all of these people would do well to learn something about “cheap” and “costly” grace. no one is saying that platner is irredeemable, but that some things are a bridge too far for someone seeking a public trust. if he feels truly contrite, he can work on himself and his community and try again.
