One of the many joys of using AI for programming is the creation of huge PRs on complex topics that the authors barely understand, but still suggest "because they work". Here's a great example from

Watching Civilisation Rise and Fall on BBC2. Rome being "hollowed out from inside" by a super wealthy elite not paying their fair share and using immigrants as a handy scapegoat for why things are going wrong. Plus ça change.

Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

I've said before that Britain is afflicted by a triple-humiliation: loss of aristocracy; empire; political/media credibility. Brexit was essentially the last gasp of the British ruling class yelling to the Commonwealth, "Come on chaps, we're leaving," then marching out into the blizzard alone—nude.

My favourite moment during the Brexit negotiations was when David Davis went to the press to complain that none of the EU member states would agree to negotiate trade deals with Britain on a one-on-one basis and would only do so as a bloc – as though they were in some sort of union.

The story told here--one where anecdata suggests agency and autonomy have run amok and nameless activists are to blame--certainly rhymes with the NYT's disastrous panic about trans kids. Then you realize it's literally being written by the same author.

Darren Jones has said he wants to "turn off the legacy state" but this govt appears to want to replace the legacy state with random, uncosted proposals that make them tough for a couple of news cycles, rather than actually having a grip on what is happening.

It’s one of the reasons LTNs are so important because they are carrot and stick at the same time. They provide safe area-wide active alternatives and fast bus routes whilst sending private traffic the long way around. But much more stick still needed on parking, road pricing, tax etc.

Periodically I see people justifying means-testing to ensure The Rich don't get stuff for free when they can afford it. I see the logic, but we can just tax them more. Plus, the BIGGEST thing not means-testing solves is *deep breath* IT STOPS RICH PEOPLE FINANCIALLY-ABUSING THEIR KIDS ANYMORE.

i just reviewed 50+ applications for an arts award and most of them were written by chatgpt. And then the other reviewers said they put them into Gemini to rank them. At a certain point, if everyone is giving their thinking entirely over to AI, why are we even bothering with any of this anymore?

10/ If that siloing had been in place previously, we'd have never seen Fighting Fantasy books, very much a case of applying RPG elements to CYOA books. (And probably the single thing that most grew the UK hobby WHILE reducing the effects of D&D dominance).

It’s a sign of how insane the news cycle is these days that this historic failure of government policy got just one day of news coverage this week. Not saying that’s right or wrong, but it’s astonishing how quickly the agenda moves on these days.

The choreography is a bit cliched. 1. Client government in USA issues Russian-authored peace plan. 2. Russia pretends to reject its own plan & demands even more extreme measures. 3. USA presses Ukraine to accept plan as “compromise.” They think we’re all as stupid & amoral as our president.
