i wrote about how the social roles and expectations society imposes on us change over time, how our identity is a negotiation with our environment, how our views on gender and sexuality are always shifting, and how our mental models can blind us to reality:

toronto's diversity is more unique in the *number* of sizeable different ethnic communities. that's what diversity means. in NA this is only surpassed by NYC, maybe paralleled by LA, but not any other US city. it punches above in diversity among the majority-minority cities in NA for its size

A lot of public discourse is about whether trans people have the "right" to enter this or that space. But I think at its core this a question of liberty, not claim rights. We should all have the freedom to change our sex, in the same way we have the freedom to change our religion or our sexuality.

I've decided to start writing a newsletter. Its name is Infrastory, which I've long thought captures what I focus on. It's a portmanteau of infrastructure and history, but it's also about telling the story beneath ("infra") the surface. You can find & subscribe at

publicising your interim victories IS important during a prolonged period of resistance, because authoritarians want you to give up hope. so they need you to believe they are ten times more cunning, capable, disciplined, smarter than you, but they simply aren't, and it helps to say so & show it.

Rather than paying doctors for the time they spend renewing prescriptions, the province has moved that cost onto us directly. I live in Ottawa where I'm a 1h45 minute *one way* bus ride to my Dr's office. I now need to make that trip every 3 months or else pay $25 every time I need my Rx renewed.

The South has been an authoritarian enclave for most of American history. Madison and Hamilton, despite very different ideological outlooks knew that 1.) slavery could stop the constitution from being ratified, and 2.) the "compromise" over slavery made the Constitution unstable. 2/x

I view American history as a tug of war between these forces, and recently we've seen an upsurge in support for Southern style authoritarianism, but it is not new. In fact, the South has been an authoritarian enclave far longer than it has been a democracy. Authoritarianism ain't foreign. 7/x

Americans have a caricatured view of democracy of something that has just always existed, and this is an unfortunate oversight. American history has always been a conflict between democracy and authoritarianism. Hopefully we emerge more democratic on the other side. 9/9

As I’ve noted, what AI promises to democratize is seeing like a state; using the eye of the master to remake oneself in the image and powers of the master. For anyone to exert surveillance and social control over anyone else (and the more compute you have, the better)—and to sell this as freedom.
