That's because they are in tension with one another. The people who want smartphone bans are teachers and parents. The people who want AI education are politicians and tech bros.

I’ve said this before but the opening night sold out screening I went to is one of my fav theater experiences bc I’ve been in plenty of movies that alienated ppl (esp at fests) but I’ve never felt an *entire room* turn feral against a movie en masse. One of the wildest atmospheres I’ve ever felt.

You’d think it wouldn’t be possible for WWE to be run more cynically and exploitatively by someone other than Vince McMahon but TKO is mixing carny mindset with McKinsey mindset

I made a lemon pepper chickpea recipe that turned out kinda bland despite me increasing the garlic/shallot quantities just based on knowing who I am. But then I remembered I have Lao Gan Ma.

Reminder that Florida voters passed a Constitutional amendment in 2010 banning gerrymandering with 62% of the vote and the Florida GOP just stole the courts and ignored it. By contrast retaliatory gerrymanders in CA and VA passed with the approval of voters. Yet media portrays them as equivalent.

Rewatched Johnny Guitar yesterday and so many shots are just still floating around my mind. I’ve always said that the studio era and even silent westerns were as revisionist as the post-Leones but truly no other movie is like this. Truffaut nailed it when he called it a Beauty and the Beast dream

Devens is the best kind of self-aware player, not merely a superfan who talks about himself in relation to prior players but someone who understands that the goal should be to make great tv while also playing smartly. He’s simultaneously chaotic and able to calmly observe how everyone else unspools

I’d never listened to one of Larry Heard’s LPs so I put this one on and was transported. Hard to call a two-hour extravaganza a “distillation” but it really does synthesize everything he’s great at while also doing things I’ve never heard on his singles

Even the deepest red areas in the country are running data center contractors out of town on a rail but Dems are happy to keep taking controlled opposition money from a sector that is 100% behind the republican neo-feudal project. Complete fucking swine

Ernest Dickerson is one of the only American filmmakers I've come across who is so clearly inspired by Mario Bava's expressive usage of color & because of this he is one of the greatest horror filmmakers of his generation & one of the best cinematographers.

This is the part I like: “To recover the funds, nearly all of Noel’s assets were ordered sold at auctions. Among the items on the block, dozens of his personal items, guns, custom suits, watches, old police cruisers and luxury vehicles.” I wish this on every criminal billionaire. Take EVERYTHING.

The GA governor race ads may actually kill me. Rick Jackson is running some of the most demented ads I’ve ever seen, basically Hillbilly Elegy inspirational resentment where he mentions being abandoned by his father and growing up poor, then instantly pivoting to tax cuts and racism.

That scene in Brazil where Pryce goes to visit Michael Palin’s torturer and he sees a secretary pleasantly humming to herself doing steno for what’s going on in Palin’s office and she pulls off her headphones and you hear bloodcurdling screams is basically me listening to metal while working.

Really I think WWE’s last truly great arc, and all of it ran counter to the company’s wishes. Danielson is the best for so many reasons but throwing himself into leaving the company no option but to put the belt on Kofi is better even than his own Mania moment.

My biggest conspiracy theory is that telling working class people that engagement in the arts is a middle / upper class thing and to do so makes you a class traitor is a psyop to make them disengaged with themselves and the world and the beauty of being human, so that they accept worse treatment.

Difficult to overstate the long term harm of the 2000s wave of prominent atheists all being racist, misogynistic freaks who seemed to think the problem with religion was giving some kind of woo-woo permission structure to be a bigot vs “evolutionary” reasons to be one

The funniest thing in Purple Rain is always the juxtaposition of the crowds at First Ave consistently going ape for Prince while the promoter just shakes his head and is like “The Kid is losing me business! No one wants his daring blend of funk, soul, and hard rock!”

We do not concede the south, the birthplace & continued lifeblood of the Black American experience, to people who hate us. We do not throw in the towel. Black people have every right to be southerners & very much are no matter who likes it.

They could appoint so many judges because Obama left so many vacancies. He also oversaw historic D losses in state legislatures in part because he put party resources into his own campaign and let Rahm run shit. Bernie Bros are nowhere near as responsible for the courts and loss of our rights.
