it's too bad if these ghouls have to be in what's left of the white house we couldn't at least get another round of melania's julie taymor götterdämmerung christmas, instead it's just donny's hideous 1980s scarface death in florida style

Inscrutable practices of the Prince estate and unfortunate timing along a host of much more impressive reissues (including THREE of Minnesota’s other proudest exports) aside, I hope the Around the World in a Day reissue gets it a fresh look. Such a fascinating left turn at a moment of world conquest

Oh weird, this thing that spends like $50 for ever dollar it makes despite forcing taxpayers to eat its electricity costs, is becoming more unpopular by the day but is also absolutely the future of everything isn’t doing well????

I’m sure they’ve played it more than once but the Fox Theater in Atlanta showed this when I was a kid and already loved it but seeing that movie in a theater with this interior was otherworldly.

Having been shocked by how much I enjoyed Wicked Pt 1 I held out hope I would enjoy the second movie but hoo boy what a shitshow. Simultaneously dragged out to a ludicrous degree and belligerently rushed on all the emotional beats, done like a MCU movie more than a musical. Ruinously straight.

Thanks so much to GQ for publishing my liner notes for the new Replacements 'Let It Be' boxset, out on Friday. Extra special thanks to Jessica Hopper, Patterson Hood and Brian Paulson for their extraordinary insights. What an absolute joy this project has been to work on.

When The Replacements' Courage Was at its Peak
On their 1984 album ‘Let It Be,’ the Minneapolis indie-rock wastrels spewed a message of working-class passion and outsider solidarity into the world's answering machine.

The Master is maybe the best American two-hander of the 21st century but for me the defining scene of it is this moment where one of Dodd’s most faithful believes in him so much she spots a discrepancy and in earnestly seeking to reconcile it this happens

while I’m being cranky, access journalism needs to go. When the president does his “I’m alpha because I insulted you” thing somebody needs to fall on his sword and say “what the fuck is wrong with you, old man?” on a hot mic. the hero of the wizard of Oz is Toto.

I usually have zero desire to seek out modern pop on vinyl bc almost all of it is mixed for streaming but I’m increasingly tempted to get the Rosalía record in a physical format.

It was always hilarious that Grok tended somehow to be the least inherently racist AI despite Musk constantly screaming “add more slurs!” to his captive H1-B workers so now they’ve finally found a way to give the boss what he wants, a Mombot 3000 to say he’s the best and handsomest boy.

There are a lot of things I admire about Chuck Schuldiner and near the top of the list is how immaculately produced every Death album is. Usually in underground metal drums are one big noise and the bass guitar is there for emotional support but every single element is so perfectly miked and mixed.

If I Had Legs I’d Kick You: The Babadook without the release valve of a monster, as stressful as a movie can be. Byrne is deservedly going to get a lot of hype for this for how much she cracks but imo the real genius of her performance is all the little reflexive expressions trying to look fine

I love the Dropkick Murphys because "Irish-American" + "gen X" + "punk rocker who's been at it for 30 years" should be the formula for the most racist guy alive but instead Ken Casey is constantly giving interviews where he's like "fascists are demons from hell and that's where they belong"

In normal times when I read something about a trial or a legal case, I always try to get someone who understands these things to confirm whether or not I’m understanding it. I still do that, but now also I have to ask if what I’m seeing is really as stupid as I’m understanding it.
