I think you could make a compelling database thriller using maps. Deducing where a photo was taken because there's only one pub that's across the street from a bank, comparing the town map to a survey map from the 1800s, a pattern where several incidents are equidistant from a certain place...etc.

In Dispatch they present the idea that superheroes work for private companies that hire them to protect their subscribers, a protection racket essentially, like ancient fire fighters, but they don't really mention it again. Seems like a juicy angle for what being a 'hero' means in this setting.
