Google and AI search are now dedicated to stripmining the whole web for Information. The personality, creativity, and connection of personal websites are, to them, pointless. But the old ways still work! A billion little fires still smolder out there. You just have to go find them yourself.

The worse Google gets, the more I find myself longing for a more primal internet experience: and the joy of clicking a link when you didn't know what awaited on the other side.

Google's obsession with killing off links betrays what made the internet great
The best version of the internet put links first, but Google no longer wants you to leave its own search pages.

AOL Instant Messenger. I saved backups of my AIM chats with my friends from the late ’90s and early 2000s, when we were in middle school and high school. Reading them now is so cringey.

Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century “woke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison. Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.

Do you ever think about the fact that Wikipedia is the last good major website on the internet? You aren't bombarded with ads. It doesn't try to push video on you, and it doesn't redirect you to a scam site.

the thing everyone is going to have to accept is that the post-trump period, whenever it comes, will not and cannot be a project of national unity, it must be a project of partisan project of renewal, in the same way that reconstruction and the new deal were partisan projects of renewal.

Most of the internet used to be like this. This is actually the default, it took companies enclosing the internet and adding weird, soul-killing incentives to make people behave the way they do now. In a way, there is truly nothing special about Wikipedia except that it survived longer.
