We should have self-driving cars but they should only go forward and backward along preset routes. Also they should go like eight or ten at a time, maybe hooked together somehow? And maybe you could go between them and one car could have bathrooms and a snack bar? Still workshopping this

Altman's "intelligence as a metered service" captures the AI moment well—it's an attempt at the formal subsumption of ever-finer microrealms of human labour embedded within capitalist production. You already have an underpaid email job but what if you also had to pay the machine to write your emails

The whole "AI" industry is just based on the hope that they can deskill people fast enough that they'll have to rent back cognitive support systems. Forever. It's like Uber. Just that they don't try to break existing transportation infrastructures but your brain.

It's not just automation of jobs, it's that AI increases precarity of the workforce which creates a large pool of desperate skilled workers to train AI to more effectively replace them. And it's unclear to me where unions can really intervene effectively here.

Paying taxes is great, actually, I love having roads and public services and programs that allow my neighbors to buy groceries. It’s too bad that Republicans steal these funds and send them to countries committing genocide and private companies with sweetheart contracts.

I'm not even conceding this stuff is "good at programming" any more. your understanding of what "programming" is, in its totality, is narrow and broken if you believe this. the amount of actual *computing* those machines could be doing anywhere else, just for a start, is mind baffling

I know I know everyone's sick of this subject being "divisive" but I don't think it is possible to defend even the existence of this technology at this point, and my patience for anyone who tries is worn down to a nub

It is true that Proton is located in Switzerland and responded to a legal request from the Swiss authorities. But it is also true that most people do not know what an MLAT is and there is a widespread misunderstanding that using Proton will protect your account from US govt requests.

Silicon Valley runs on erasure of consent. Consent is friction. Inefficient and not binary. It does not compute. It’s tech’s kryptonite.

Sorry I'm not more open-minded about LLMs, it's just some fucking maniacs shoveled out a bunch of useless bloatware featuring that technology, did not give me any chance to opt out, reorganized the entire economy around it, zeroed out gains made by green energy, and made it impossible to buy RAM

Congress should authorize postal banking *and* allow USPS to ground lease its land to multifamily homebuilders (provided any project on a lot holding an operating post office includes a new, renovated post office on the ground floor).
