I'm just a lowly goatherd, so maybe the economy is fine, but just looking at this chart makes my blood pressure rise.

Ugh I may regret this but ok: yes we are a rich country. Consumer goods are affordable for a lot of people -- you can get a TV or whatever when you want one, a lot of the time without emptying your savings. But the big LIFE stuff -- a kid, school, health, house -- has just gotten more expensive.

Now I'm no Numbers Man, but the thing about the U.S. is it's a pretty big place. If the poverty rate is "only 11%" that's still 37 million people. If you say 92% of people had some form of health insurance in 2022, that sounds like a lot! But that leaves 26 million who went without.

My alma mater @yale.edu is so embarrassing. In 2024 it adopted "institutional neutrality" to not comment on political matters; that didn't stop the President from praising a right-wing group for inviting McMahon to campus, but did stop her from saying if Dept of Edu should be illegally destroyed. 🙄

I am pretty sure that if a Democratic US President was in office, lashing out at the supreme pontiff, and blasphemously depicting himself as the savior, the headlines would describe this papal response as defending the church and not “hitting back.”
