this is sort of what bothers me about a lot of 'reasonable conservative' takes on how to 'renew higher ed' by making it less of a target for republicans: at a certain point, you have to be *for something*. there are options that are either worse than or functionally identical to destruction.

But somehow Trump not just breaking a promise but intentionally misrepresenting his entire extremist, revolutionary agenda to absolutely devastate and reconfigure US government is treated as, more or less, Trump Just Being Trump.

If a Democrat promised to, say, not raise taxes, and then entered office and signed a bill that raised taxes, the media would freak out - "Will President Harris's broken promise doom her in 2028?"

But for some reason, our media doesn't want to talk about it like that. Our political class, which considers things like "if you like your insurance you can keep it" to be five-alarm whoppers, acts like Trump has a mandate for Project 2025 and it must be respected. Again: it polled at FOUR PERCENT.

It is the greatest political lie ever told in American history. Not just some busted campaign promise, but an entire campaign on false pretenses. Literal cartoon supervillain behavior: waiting until you get in office and implementing a comic-book plan to annihilate US government virtually overnight.

There is not a single example in American history of a president doing something like this: having a secret agenda that's incredibly, unbelievably unpopular, spending the entire campaign pretending it's fake, and then, upon winning, going "psyche!" and not just embracing it, but expanding on it.

The story of 2024 is this: Trump had a plan to destroy American government called Project 2025, which had, literally, not a typo, a 4% approval rating. He lied constantly and said he wouldn't do it. Then he entered office and immediately implemented AN EVEN MORE EXTREME VERSION OF IT.

Also, part of why this framing is important is that US political media is incredibly reluctant to make values judgements about policies, but very willing to attack dishonesty and hypocrisy - which is theoretically value-free - and this is the most extraordinary political dishonesty in US history.

The concept here is that it’s important to go out into public spaces and say the things that Trump is supposedly investigating people for believing or saying, specifically because they won’t care and nothing will happen. It demonstrates the emptiness of their threats against speech.

There's no supremacy clause problem with state bribery laws encompassing payment of bribes to federal officials, and California's statute does, it's not limited to state government bribes. They can and should open a criminal investigation. Not wait for some future DOJ, do a state one right now.
