Blogging about the wonderful world of fiction and the humanities. Well really mostly posting now.
pinned post!
To the extent my country is exceptional it is because we are a country of all people and none. The world made manifest. A nation of nations. A people united in truly radical ideas of freedom, equality, and justice for all. Any attempt to undo this is treason and also seeks to make us ordinary.

Otherwise, insurance is, like other services, something you pay for. Do you know how much you pay your phone company if you go a month without making a phone call? Yeah, just like that.

A reminder to everyone, there's only one kind of insurance you "pay into", whole life insurance, and it sucks. You should get term life instead and invest the difference in an index fund.

I don't think this was *the* reason, but one benefit was that they allowed Emperors to appeal to the people by publicly taking an interest in chariot-racing but without having to take the divisive step of siding with either Blues or Greens - they could just claim to be a Reds or Whites supporter.

(I've never actually read anything on what the *purpose* of the Reds and the Whites was once they got totally eclipsed. We know they were still around! Presumably they must have had some social/sporting function.)

it's very simple; They Have Always Been Or: inertia is a powerful factor, four teams make a more exciting spectacle than two, and you can come up with all sorts of retroactive elaborate theories about them mirroring the four seasons and the four elements and such

disagree on this point, I think a lot of people - including lawyers - are feeling a sense of both betrayal and purpose that will make them only too happy to get into this fight.

I need someone to explain this mystique that RFK Jr. holds over some folks. I feel like it's a contingent of undiscerning people who see a bunch of status traits - old, white, male, tan, rich, Kennedy - held loosely together by a chaotic personality and media smokescreen.

Iโm going to choose violence today and argue that the tradcath/orthobro obsession with โdignified liturgyโ really has nothing to do with the implied theology of the Tridentine Mass or the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom/St. Basil and has everything to do with consuming a different aesthetic

Crank realignment is going to be brutalizing for voting margins unless we permanently activate the educated suburbs and/or demoralize them and both of those seem more appetizing than bringing cranks back onside.

another key-takeaway for me from reading about the Civil Rights movement is that those activists fully acknowledged that the South was worse than the rest of the country in most respects *and specifically brought the fight there* for that exact reason. "it's hard" doesn't equal "so give up."

the 1960s was not that long ago, and my key take-away from reading a lot of books about the Civil Rights movement recently has been the exact diametric opposite of "the South isn't really that racist compared to the rest of the country"

this doesn't mean the South is hopeless, it doesn't mean that we shouldn't keep trying to win elections and fight the MAGAs in the South, but maintaining this fantasy nonsense about how the South doesn't REALLY have a uniquely racist culture in a number of respects is just foolishness

people say "bad writing" when they actually mean "writing by someone I think is bad", and I think that most people who write for a living are unsurprisingly pretty good at it, and that I'd be much worse under the same editing/ pressure. I say all this because I think the Nuzzi piece is actually bad
