Not only is Tom Hanks protecting his own health, by masking up he’s protecting everyone else on public transit. Many people taking the subway don’t have paid time off. They don’t have the good healthcare someone like Hanks can afford. Masking is community care.

What if we did tho, what if we didn’t means test disabled people on the SLP and just paid it like we do for NZ Super? Not related to your partner’s income, not related to your income, and just, well, supported people?!

Talking to a nurse at my GP's office today - apparently they're being inundated by people wanting MMR vaccines. Thousands of them, she told me it seems like. Hopefully this means our vaccination rates will get somewhere near where they need to be to stop future outbreaks.

Back when Aotearoa New Zealand was voting via referendum on whether or not to ditch First Past the Post for Mixed Member Proportional for our voting system, the cartoonist Murray Ball put out the below comic. I see those telling New Yorkers not to vote for Zohran Mamdani and think on this comic.

Measles Timely reminder for New Zealanders ⬇️ It’s not just the immediate infection, the hospitalisation rate (1 in 3 kids), etc.; it’s also that measles can wipe out immunity to other illnesses. Link to geeky explanation below 😊

Yall, if you feel the need to donate food to folks who need it that’s amazing. Do that. Just… don’t do it on Halloween. Don’t give kids ramen for trick or treats. Halloween is for candy & costumes-not being reminded that you’re poor. Let kids have fun & a night where they are just like other kids.

Hey fam, just a reminder that using Afterpay with small businesses costs us a LOT in fees (about 8-10%). Totally fine to use it, that’s why I have it, but also, if you can do it with larger businesses and not with us little guys, it makes a huge difference to our bottom line over time x

Please please folks check your vaxx status & that of your kids. Measles is not “just a childhood illness”; before vaccinations it killed and disabled millions of people every year. Remember, your vaccine doesn’t just protect you, but those too young or too immunocompromised to be vaccinated.

But this misses out the best part of this mosaic! To the left of Odysseus' ship is a smaller boat with a man holding what looks suspiciously like a gigantic prawn. This man is likely to be the homeowner who commissioned the mosaic. (Mosaic from Dougga, Tunisia; C3rd AD; currently in Bardo Museum)

Also worth noting that our worst paid nurses in New Zealand, the ones whose pay equity claims were thrown in the trash by this government aren't able to join the strike today. But remember that primary health care, aged care and Māori health service nurses stand in solidarity with the strike.
