Instead of blaming social media for short attention spans, I think it makes more sense to say that social media can be used to exploit our social attention spans in ways that can be harmful, and may even be replacing other behaviors that do not reward our short attention spans as effectively.

"Above the fold" and "below the fold" applied to print journalism long before it applied to web layouts for online media. For decades, the best practices surrounding conveying information to the masses has hinged on the well known fact that most people don't pay attention for long.

I think it's interesting to blame social media for why people's attention spans are so short, when in the early days of social media, people creating social media had to be repeatedly coached to keep the content brief and eye-catching because *users couldn't sustain attention*.
