It took me a while to realise that when American friends spoke of the need for more walkable cities in certain parts of the US, they often didn't mean more and better footpaths so much as "You literally cannot move around on foot here. Please fix that."

tl,dr; Scientists no longer allowed to use federal funding to publish, attend meetings, or talk to the public. They cannot collaborate internationally. Grants can be cancelled for any reason, at any time, political appointees have a final say over what gets funded, and who gets funded.

If their goal is to choke off economic advantages from the US’s university system it’s hard to think of a more effective way. Scientists and other academics come to the US to study— then stay in the US often via green cards, to start companies, do unique work, and contribute to the US economy.

This is absolutely one of the worst rhetorical parts. The imprecision is maddening; the way it runs over decades of work is pure colonialism. Coding culture used to loathe “marketing words” and revere specificity; the bullshit nature of this framing is proof that these are money guys, not tech guys.
