FWIW: what I've said here is mostly reiterating reporting I've heard on NPR and read in other outlets - I don't have links handy but the TL;DR is bad flu year, get your shot, make sure your kids get their shots.

One of the earliest-ever modern portrayals of Santa Claus features him gifting Union soldiers with a jumping-jack doll of Jefferson Davis dangling from a noose - as drawn by political cartoonist Thomas Nast.

The thesis of the book is that early COVID lockdowns weren't worth it and mid-COVID mitigation measures like masks, contact tracing and business closures don't work. This is laughably false and the authors have endorsed the people now running Trump's HHS.

Worth repeating this with every new Epstein document drop. The party of Denny Hastert is the party of Jim Jordan is the party of Matt Gaetz is the party of Donald Trump. Looking the other way and protecting child predators from the law is their brand.

I'm a millennial who grew up with early digital tech and loved it, I was a tech optimist for so long, I would in a tech-adjacent role, and what finally made me a tech critic was just watching and experiencing what these companies actually do. It is demonstrably causing a lot of real harm.

I want to take a moment of reflection. I donāt post a lot of threads anymore (bc really who wants to read them) but this seems like a good time to make a few points about wins & losses & surviving & fighting during the Trump administrationās siege on democracy. Especially as 2025 comes to a close.

In the hallmark movies where the lady goes back home from the big city, they never talk about the game she must play pretending that the ethnic food in the small town is anywhere near as good as her family thinks it is. Just grimacing while eating mid Thai food.

This is "I know that Jesus is a magic demigod, and the important thing is to show God the respect that he deserves", but actually the story of the Nativity is, "I don't know who this stranger is, but I can see they need help, and I'm going to be compassionate whether he deserves it or not."

Every policy has winners and losers. The goal of good policy is to maximize the winners while minimizing the losers. Congestion pricing does this remarkably well a) given the stats on who drives into Manhattan and b) how it offers remedies such as tax credits to low-income drivers.

Weird weekend, huh? Took a crack at breaking down the whole Clair Obscur genAI situation, and its bizarre fallout, as best as possible. My main takeaway right now is that people really need to figure out exactly what they're criticizing or it's going to get messy.
