We are treated very, very differently to our cisgender peers growing up, we're ostracized and brutalized into a shell of ourselves, so we retreat and that closet is an extremely painful place to be, one that is immeasurably difficult to relate or explain to someone else if you've not lived it.

The "socialization" we experience is being violently beaten into that closet, to have our expression being met with punishment from those around us, so we shrink ourselves down, we hide and quieten and suppress ourselves, apologize constantly because we are hypervigilant about taking up space...

Society in general understands that when someone proverbially "comes out of the closet" they are not someone who is suddenly deciding to be gay; they are someone who is no longer hiding. We understand that a person hiding or suppressing their sexuality is not a neutral state, it is a traumatic one.

Maybe it is just because I'm trying to bend my own diet into new shapes to avoid the 'beetus but I think a lot of people really need to internalise that our relationship to food is OUR relationship to food, not theirs, and that can be simple or it can be a huge pain in the ass.

I recall being forced to sit at the kitchen table and not allowed to leave until I’d eaten everything on my plate, forced to hold food in my mouth and swallow even with my texture issues; even if it was food I didn’t want. I even got beat for it. Fuck all that.

Many parents see their relationship to their kids in bizarrely adversarial terms but hate it when it's pointed out.

You could call this child coddled or overly-indulged but the simple fact is that most people have dysfunctional and poor relationships with food, and that didn't happen because current cultural norms around food and parenting are awesome and cool and great. Maybe try to work with your kids.

I know a very young, very neurodivergent child who eats enough food but whose metabolism is high, so weight is still just on this end of "concerning". Very few safe foods, cannot focus for long enough to sit and eat a meal at a table, and stopped eating a food because the packaging changed.
