The way the government should step in is to reverse the Supreme Court misjudgement, which it keeps implying it is bound by, but which it could easily undo at any time.

How should you participate in a society in which the 'health' system systematically harms your health, the 'human rights' commission removes your human rights, the 'justice' system refuses even to hear you and the 'independent' State broadcaster broadcasts lies about you? A non-rhetorical question.

Fundamentally Labour went into the last election with a manifesto containing incompatible pledges. So the question was “will they abandon their tax pledges to meet their public service improvement pledges or vice versa?” Kinda fun that their answer has been “how about we abandon both?”

I simply do not believe that voters are incapable of understanding “1/6th of the worlds oil supply is blocked, we must use less of it” and if you do genuinely do believe that I don’t know what’s the point of engaging in politics

I've said it before, but it's really weird how every party is behaving like the platonic ideal of a political career is the Boris Johnson premiership: come to power on the back of impossible promises, have a miserable 30 months in office and eventually get forced out in disgrace

Don't subsidise energy prices during a supply crisis: give cash transfers to low-income and vulnerable households instead.

Interesting to see Ed Davey get it so wrong on the energy crisis. He's been treading the sensible, practical, heading in the right direction at a reasonable pace line very effectively for a good while now, but he's taken a massive misstep by arguing for increased demand at a time of supply shortage.

Fuel duty is *already* 34p per litre lower, in real terms, than in 2010 Its been frozen or cut for 15 years Its cost the Treasury over ÂŁ200bn in tax - and hugely incentivised people to keep using ICE cars and driving. It's favoured the richest If anything we should be restoring it to 2010 levels

trains are pretty full at rush hour, I don't think more fare subsidies can help modal shift. the less said about fuel duty the better. there is simply less oil to go round. we need policies that make us use less of it, you can't solve the problem making things cheaper by fiat.

so they're closing the West Coast Main Line for a week, huh? the single line connecting London to four of Britain's next five biggest urban conurbations? that's mad, weird that no one's ever thought to build an alternative route, perhaps even one that runs at a high speed, too. crazy

if you have a $4 pack of lettuce, ~40c is diesel. that's doubled to 80c, meaning your pack of lettuce is now $4.40. that's a 10% increase, not 25-50% the fertilizer is the real issue imo

I dont look at this and think "what has become of our young men?". I think the immense social penalty of being a right wing teen is so pronounced that only terminally online fash-larping edgelords can be arsed. It's a sieve that filters out everyone but the most massive, psychotic dorks imaginable.

The "young men are overwhelmingly turning to the right" narrative isn't just contradicted by every stat we have, it stops us talking about something weirder: the UK/US' insane rightward shift means ANY young man involved in frontline right wing politics is now a bigger freak than we can even imagine

While this article is sound I wish it wouldn't concede to the framing that the bodies of women should be regulated. Michael Phelps has a 1 in 1,00,000 trait that helps him succeed and he is celebrated for it. A woman has a 1 in 10,000 trait and 20+ years of an athletic career is ended.

I feel like Goodwin is getting a lesson in the fact that, even in hard right politics, you can be either pleasant to work with or good at the job but you do actually need to be one of them. His cardinal error was to be a prickly, thin-skinned arsehole and then lose. No one to blame but himself.
