It's important to remember that "the center" isn't a coherent political position. It means nothing. It's completely dependent on what the two sides are for this imaginary center to remain equidistant from. But more than that, if you dig into the positions "centrists" have, they're just Republicans.

The average co-worker has politics that are more confusing and muddled then you could possibly imagine. They are not being won over because a Democrat perfectly threaded the moderate political needle. You have to win people over through vibes and by making them broadly believe you're on their side.

This is a big part of why Democrats fail in elections IMO. They try to micro-target their message to things like "migrants are human and we want an orderly asylum process but we also need to hire more border guards" when the median low-info voter simply does not interact with politics this way.
