I have basically 0 hope that Gimp can turn it around. I would bet on Krita or Blender building out proper photo tools before GIMP becomes halfway usable.

I'm gonna have to start recommending weird ways of image editing/painting. Like using HEAVYPAINT or Rebelle, or raw dogging everything using imagemagick compositing.
