The USDA sent an email to grocery stores telling them they are prohibited from offering special discounts to customers affected by the SNAP funding lapse. I'm aware of at least 2 stores that had offered struggling customers a discount, then withdrew it after receiving this email

Almost all of them lack the strength of character, the basic moral code to stand up for these ideas in the face of thousands of people calling them ridiculous for doing so. They see people like me getting targeted for asserting these ideas and want to be in the group laughing, not a target.

It is a social environment that half of the most powerful Americans spend 6+ hours a day in. In that environment, if you stand up for basic principles like “racism is bad” or “being a Nazi is a big deal and unacceptable,” you will be mocked by tens of thousands of people as a screechy moralist.
