In terms of how the Hill works Pelosi at 75% is still better than anyone else. She's a giant, and Harris's failure shouldn't diminish her achievement in deposing Biden. She was right, but the opportunity opened too late. But in retail politics there's been a hole in her swing for some time.

The whole point of Cuomo running for mayor was so he could leave money on the table in order to run against Albany, then return there. It can't happen now. You can't win without the city.

There was not as much for Sliwa in Staten Island as I thought, but Mamdani did better than I expected. He did well along the northern shoreline in the primary. In the general he took most of it, going as far inland as Bulls Head and Park Hill.

This held. He did take the Upper East Side. I haven't run the numbers but it seems Cuomo lost the Upper West. He took the areas by the river and most of Lincoln Center apart from the university, but lost almost the entire area bordering the park.

When Cuomo resigned he was unpopular but insulated. The women going after him gave everyone license to say what they thought. Boylan, an urban planner, was harrassed by Cuomo. She broke the dam in ‘21, and when he surfaced she swore she’d sink him again. She put her shoulder to the wheel on this.

She is one of the most hated people on the Hill. No professional wants to work for her, and she kills those kids who come work for nothing. It's worse than being an asshole. She doesn't play with a full deck. One of these days she's going to crack up on live television.

This is what I mean when I call Sanders smart.

A good way to think about it is this: however you feel about Mamdani, you know what he wants to do. He didn’t say “opportunity” or “create an economy,” he said, “Here is what I want to do. I might have to fight, but I’ll fight.” You couldn’t name a thing Cuomo actually wanted to do.

Mamdani hasn't quite said it, but almost, and I think he might get there - "I'm not a Communist. But if you call a dignified job, a roof over people's heads, and food on the table Communism, that's your problem."

That idiot George Santos said the other day that "Curtis" ought to consider himself persona non grata in New York after this. On historic turnout Mamdani will win by over 200,000 votes. More people will buy Sliwa lunch and donate to his his cat charities than anything else.

Here's one for free - "Mamdani obviously listened to his constituents, and was repaid for that. The same is true for [my collleagues] Sherrill, Spanberger, etc. It's the same work we all do. We learn when it's done well and carry on working for the communities we represent."

That was a hell of speech—as local as it comes yet a national gauntlet from someone who can’t run for president. Mamdani is saying New York will show others the way.

Mamdani's hero is LaGuardia. He just mentioned him again. And I maintain he has more in common with New Dealers than socialists. But you can't responsibly write about him without writing about the Milwaukee "sewer socialists" of 1910-60. Nothing he says is new, only the applications.

Anecdotally in New Jersey we are hearing this sort of thing a lot.

I figured Sherrill would take it by eight or ten. I did not see a margin like this, and I look forward to studying where the votes came from. I can only imagine a good portion are late-breaking.

It isn’t new—Trump did it—but Mamdani is the first to my knowledge to do it in a locally targeted way—he found the big social media creators, the TikToks and so forth, whatever New York kids watch, and he created things just for them. He did appearances.

It is Cuomo’s own goddamn fault. It is not easy to look like a carpetbagger in the city of your birth. Mamdani didn’t create that perception, he pushed on it.

By the time the paper ballots are counted I figure Mamdani is at 53% at least.

Spanberger’s campaign in its form and function was more similar to Mamdani’s than anyone will admit. But it was for Virginia.

Cheney's theory of executive power is the logical conclusion of Nixon's. That's why he was hired. What Nixon would not do is bomb other countries back to the stone age for pocket money while trying to re-make the world in his own image. He had blood on his hands too, but not like that.

Cuomo can probably win the Upper East Side again. The fact that I have to qualify it tells you everything. He might win the Upper West, but if so not by much. Brooklyn around Prospect Park will go to Mamdani.

Jane Forbes Clark owns Cooperstown. Owns it. All the country around it. She is the reason why it looks like it does. Bonds, Clemens, and Rose don’t stand a chance.

I go back and forth on Murphy. I respect him deeply. There is no smarter, tougher player or better person. In his prime he was as good as anybody. He's low on the scale of inducted centerfielders, though. I'd really have to sit with the numbers.

I think Lofton has a strong case. Like McGriff he played clean in a dirty era, and moving teams hurt him. But he measures as well or better against people who nobody questions, like Puckett.

Utley will get in. Whitaker too, I think, though it's outrageous it's taken so long. Kent compares favorably to them but his defense wasn't quite as good. It's a strong but difficult case.

Rose is not on the ballot yet. Mike Schmidt said the other day that support for Rose within the Hall of Fame is about 50-50, he doesn't see it changing, and Jane Forbes Clark names the committees. He seems to accept it won't happen, and recommended a Rose exhibit that tells the truth.

Bonds and Clemens will not go in via the new committee. I doubt Murphy or Mattingly do either.

If they do withhold money from New York when Mamdani wins, you are going to get people - and I don't advocate or recommend this - not paying taxes. Someone who can afford it may actually do it as a test case. And when the IRS comes calling, it will be a big deal.

Mamdani is written up nationally as this guy who parachuted in with a platform written by Sanders HQ. If that were true he wouldn't be winning like this. He's only doing what good politicians do - going into the street and asking, "What can I do?" Then he tries to balance those interests.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about him is he has never risen to the bait on this, not once. His answer is always some form of, “I want to be Mayor of New York.”

Conversely, Sliwa saying New York has had socialist mayors before and survived - and he isn't afraid of socialists like he is Cuomo - was cold as hell.

It helps that Mamdani is a nice-looking kid, charming, good on camera, but that's the thing. I said recently there can be no more ads with somebody wearing his old fighter jacket on Main Street while a deep voice narrates. You have to be witty, tell a story.
