Late afternoon but night falls like shutters. Down. Bang. Thatâs yer lot. Air has chill fingers of ageing, damp, deathly. Through whatâs left of the cloudsâ sallow grey-brown flesh, dark purple pours like worsening contusion, across which black voids then spread, tree & house-shaped, infinitely deep

The value of reading history is you know that in 1860 there were abolitionists who were so demoralized that they thought chattel slavery would be permanent. 5 years later those still alive had lived to see its end.

How hard can that be really... New boxes are expensive unless you bulk buy, people would make a little effort and even pay a bit.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 111: Treat the process of creating a character like that of getting to know a friend. Let them talk. See what you find out. Don't expect to know them fully the first time you meet them on the page. Tease out their past, their secrets. Allow them to surprise you.
