It’s really hard to describe to people who are not artists how survival mode does *not* inspire creativity, as the myth would have us believe. It suppresses creativity as you try to limit every possible risk – and the opportunities that come with them.

This isn't the first time moms have been blamed for their kids' autism
One of the earliest theories of autism is centered on “refrigerator mothers.” Echoes of it can be found in plans to Make America Healthy Again.

A popular user has apparently been suspended for mildly criticizing Bluesky’s CEO, and since she loudly proclaimed that bans and TOS violations were HER domain… Huge mistake. She handed everyone an easy narrative. The Waffles thing is opaque but ”Lady Plushbottom bullies user for joke“ is crystal.

This has been a really bad weekend for Bluesky. The team is squandering all of the goodwill they've built up and the glossy press they've gotten this year. It's honestly pretty disappointing.

Because it isn't. I see biology disrespected everyday by IT people and it drives me up the fucking wall. Ask a biologist to tell you how complex proteins can get. Or rna sequencing. Or organelles inside a cell. Or take one look at a book on histology. Computers are simple in comparison.

If you want to talk eugenics, the training process for LLMs generates many copies of models & deletes underperforming models in the process. If each of those models is a person, have you committed genocide of less able-bodies algorithms? The correct answer is, "No that's stupid fuck off"

Not to put too fine a point of it, but if the penalty for burning a country’s flag is a year in prison, that country’s flag no longer stands for freedom or liberty, it stands for tyranny. Canada has had its “elbows up” moment with the Trump administration…

Don’t believe anyone who tells you that intelligence shows anything “without a doubt,” but even if the intelligence was water-tight, this strike was still murder. No law permits the deliberate, premeditated killing of civilians.

My book is about how Nazis got power, how they kept it, & how to fight it—how we fought it then, how we can now. Nazis weren’t a foregone conclusion. They were not inevitable. They want you to think so—convince you they already won so you quit fighting. Because they know they can’t win otherwise.

Happy International Coffee Day! A German word that describes a coffee substitute, usually made from barley malt, is Muckefuck. It essentially means "rotting wood mulch" and can also describe any weak coffee. So next time someone makes you a bad coffee feel free to say "What the Muckefuck is this?"

In food history, we notice how super-refined foods--gelatin, vienna sausage, white bread--lose class and become horrifying once they become industrialized. Suddenly, fingermarks in bread dough demonstrate skill, not clumsiness. Post-chatGPT, I'm feeling this about writing. Smoothness feels gross.
