It is a pure insanity that the US would abstain from lasting peace

But it did. Last year, the US refused to condemn Russia's invasion. Even China, that's funding Russia's war effort, abstained. That should have been the day the penny dropped but people still have trouble believing it.

Russia was always rogue. China might have dabbled in not playing ball but can still be engaged within the UN. The US is a nation that founded the UN and therefore it's rejection of international order is far more critical.
