Kids with Batten Disease often have respiratory issues. We’ve worked so hard to keep Amelia out of the hospital, but last night, her breathing became very labored. She’s in the ICU on a strong BiPAP. She’s doing a bit better, and we hope she can avoid being intubated. We really hate Batten Disease.

Here's a really easy New Year's Resolution: If you're sick with something contagious, you will stay home if your circumstances allow. If you can't stay home, you will mask around others until there is no possibility you are contagious. By making these choices, you will literally save lives.

I don’t care if others stare at me because I mask, they don’t pay my bills. They are not going to be there for me if I get long covid. It’s that simple really and risk is not low it’s cumulative.

So the first thing we can all do in 2026 to improve our lives is put the focus on the air we breathe. Even opening a window regularly each hour for 10-15 minutes can reduce your risk of infections x 5.

1. We need clean air everywhere. This should become a national healthy obsession. There are so many reasons for us needing clean indoor air & cleaner outdoor air. Over 8 million deaths globally a year are caused by air pollution.

Requiring masks for only certain areas of the hospital is as useful as the smoking sections we used to have on planes and in restaurants. The smoke didn't stay in its section and neither will airborne viruses.

It’s wild we’re still talking about masks. I still mask up in grocery stores, elevators, public bathrooms, and public transit cuz I don’t like being sick and I don’t want to get my kid sick and it doesn’t have to be more complicated than not liking being sick. It’s weird anyone would question that.
