Beautiful John Totleben art in this issue’s Munden’s Bar backup story. Written by Timothy Truman it’s got a wonderfully creepy vibe and surprise ending that would fit right in with DC’s House of Secrets or Charlton’s Scary Tales.

Another brutal fight, but this one contains a nod to Edgar Rice Burrough’s most famous character. The mutant primate we see Grimjack kicking the “stuffing” out of is called K’rchak. And the tribe of apes that Tarzan was raised among was led by Kerchak. #themoreyouknow

He’s getting older, slower, and his vulnerabilities are starting to become more evident. A surprising move by the creators in only Issue #13 of the series.

Hey now, we were just talking about the First Graphic Novels yesterday (and their Hugh quality) and today I see an ad in Grimjack for one of the earliest they produced: American Flagg, reprinting Chakin’s original 3-part story. This is a sign I should move these up my want list, right?

The Mighty Thor by Ron Frenz

The two-part, 1977 Jim Starlin story of Warlock and Thanos in Avengers Annual 7 (The Final Threat) and Marvel Two-in-One Annual 2 (Death Watch). I bought these off the rack in real time, and have been a Starlin devotee ever since.

Their first meeting was short, but the rivalry/respect between Black Canary and Lady Shiva Woosan would get a lot of mileage after this. From more Birds of Prey issues to the more recent Black Canary: Best of the Best miniseries. It all started here.

Wow, the things I have forgotten - Lady Shiva shows up at the end of Issue #3 in this Manhunt miniseries!

I tend to think of early Birds of Prey adventures just involving Dinah and Barbara. But here in the miniseries follow up to the initial BoP one-shot, we see Dinah teaming up with future Bird member Huntress, as well as Catwoman.

Immediately started singing this thread in my head as I was reading. And it was so catchy that I then began to sing it out loud. Thankfully, no one was around to hear my terrible voice.

I’m not a gamer. But I own quite a few WEG Star Wars books because I enjoy the info dump on characters, battles, and the history of that galaxy far far away. Listening to this podcast, this book sounds like the exact same thing but full of content on the Golden Age superheroes and soldiers. A gem.

I saw someone else say this, but it really is amazing that 40 years later this is still Nightcrawler's costume. Like he's had some tweaks over the years, but they always come back to this, or some variation of it. One of the best superhero designs of all time.

Making my way thru the Nick Spencer run of Amazing Spider-Man and it’s been okay. The Kindred plot is taking a bit long to play out to where the revelation of who he is didn’t really impact much. But this last page has me excited for the future - MJ is back!

“There was a time in my life when I had lived with a wizard. He tried to teach me his wisdom.” Another interesting layer added to the character of Grimjack. One which will hopefully get explored more in depth at a later date.

Reader writes in to Grimjack regarding the level of violence depicted and its possible effect on unstable teenagers. “Add to that some Angel Dust and a community has a problem on its hands.” I’m thinking the Angel Dust is a much bigger (and valid) concern here than comic book violence.

This….is why it’s a BIG fucking deal.
