Blazing Combat 3 (Apr 1966) cover by Frank Frazetta. Archie Goodwin wrote (and edited) every story in all four issues of this series, with art by Joe Orlando, Wally Wood, Reed Crandall, Gene Colan, Alex Toth, John Severin, Russ Heath, Gray Morrow. It’s a classic.

Mike Ploog is one of my favorite artists. His cartoony, Eisner-influenced artwork always seemed to fit the horror genre at which he excelled. Here’s his cover for Werewolf By Night 8 (Aug 1973).

Comics don’t get much better or more gorgeous than these two volumes, which together comprise all of Wallace Wood’s science fiction stories for EC. Especially in The Spawn Of Venus book, Woody’s art reaches a pinnacle of detail and ornate beauty. One nitpick: I wish Wood’s covers had been included.
