One of the most enchanting works of art I’ve ever seen is a model from the 1924 plans of the never made Pravda Tower by the Vesnin Brothers. (That’s to the left, by Gold & Jones. To the right is one by Morishige.) It’s a building that could well have come from a collaboration between Herge & Kirby.

Cesar Romero’s Joker costume from 1966’s Batman TV show recently went for £212 000 at HA. Which is just a smidgen too high a sum for me. But isn’t it a brilliant costume? So beautifully designed & made. I wish I had the money & courage to dress like this.

So, Fantastic Four? I liked it. There were moments I loved & moments that, while not being lovable, didn’t overstay their welcome. The script worked, the casting worked, the world-building was top-notch. Best of all was the balance between tradition & innovation in how the FF were conceptualised.

One of Keith Robinson’s 2025 stamps celebrating the 75th anniversary of C. S. Lewis’ Narnia’s 1st appearance in print in 1950. Like many of us, I feel … uncomfortable with key aspects of Narnia. But scenes such as Lucy encountering Mr Tumnus in The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe can still enchant.

Matt “D'Israeli” Brooker’s truly splendid covers for the 2006 Dark Horse serialisation of Scarlet Traces: The Great Game. I love D'Israeli’s storytelling. Sometimes I worry I’ve lost the ability to respond to art with the awe & joy that once came easy to me. But D'Israeli’s work always delights.

Just started watching the Fantastic Four and Hang On I’ve Known This Big Guy Since 1972 or so! Splendid. (It’s only from a few seconds at the movie’s beginning. I believe younger folks refer to such things as an “Easter Egg”.)
