Last night, we took Amelia to visit the new Hanwoori Korean Garden in Federal Way. It’s a beautiful little area that’s the first traditional Korean garden in Washington. Then, we caught the sunset over at Browns Point Lighthouse Park.

The West Coast Health Alliance released vaccine recommendations for the 2025-26 respiratory virus season. Respiratory health is a HUGE concern for families dealing with Batten Disease, and we’re thankful for science-based guidance that urges accessible, logical protection for our loved ones!

Seattle heads up. We made some family covid/flu vax appointments for today at CVS for today. They called and said they were not working with (our??) insurance. We are on UW/Regence. They did suggest other pharmacies so it isn't a WA issue but a CVS issue.

Probably somewhere between 10 and noon because our 8-year-old daughter typically doesn’t go to bed until 3 or 4AM. And before either parent eats, we need to give her a nebulizer treatment and chest physical therapy in the morning due to her Batten Disease. I hope you don’t mind frozen waffles!

Tuesday ended up being a great day to bring Amelia out to the Pacific Ocean again. We packed up the minivan and headed to Ocean Shores, Wash., and spent the afternoon with Amelia’s Pop-pop, Grammie, Auntie Julia and cousins. We got Amelia right into the water thanks to her fancy beach wheelchair!

We took our daughter to the beach today. I hope everyone was nice to each other while we were gone.

My wife tried to text her parents, “We haven’t had lunch. We’re hungry.” But autocorrect suggested, “We haven’t had isotopes. We’re Hindus.”

Did you know there’s a nice little wildlife preserve a few miles from our house and it’s only open one a day month during the summer? Until recently, we didn’t either, but we took Amelia out to explore Morse Wildlife Preserve’s wheelchair-accessible boardwalk.

NFL budgets are out of control. The Giants clearly invested in some sort of time machine before Week 2.

I go load clothes in the washer and the Seahawks score another touchdown? I feel like I contributed to that.

Amelia visited a new inclusive playground at Cirque Park in University Place last night. It’s a nice place with some accessible toys for kids, including swaying and spinning platforms that can accommodate her wheelchair!

I think it would comfort him to know he could help me manually eject my CD-ROM tray and recover my stuck disc.

If anyone needs a timeline cleanse: We took Amelia to a new inclusive playground in University Place, WA. It’s a nice setup some wheelchair-accessible gliding and spinning platforms.

Amelia had a dentist appointment at Seattle Children’s today and it featured much, much less unbridled rage than last time! And then we visited the nearby Yesler Swamp boardwalk, part of the UW Botanic Gardens. It’s a zig-zaggy path where we spotted a fuzzy caterpillar, a chill heron, and more.

One of the perks of spending the afternoon outdoors is time away from the news. One of the drawbacks is spending the evening catching up.

Either a faithful recreation of Stargate Command (which I think a fan has already done somewhere) or the entirety of Springfield as depicted in The Simpsons: Hit and Run.

Holy moly. We’re watching a crime documentary and they’ve chosen to use what looks like Topaz Labs’ Photo AI app to upscale old mug shots and other photos. But they cranked the settings way, WAY too high — like eerily sharp facial features, misaligned eyes, wonky hair texture. Big yikes.

Amelia’s getting too tall for her standing frame. But I may have bought a little more time by removing the foot plate and putting it underneath its mounting plate to gain about 3/4 of an inch. It’s not much, but it seems to help with this 50-inch-tall (and growing) girl!

When Amelia was diagnosed with Batten Disease, her neurologist said she might be the first confirmed case he’s seen. He added testing has improved a lot and it’s possible kids previously went undiagnosed. That makes way more sense than a sudden “outbreak.” Anyway, this is also a post about autism.

“One” is still my favorite song in any genre. A specific part of the music video (you know which one) kicked off a lifelong obsession with drums and percussion.

Our daughter was on literal life support for 3 weeks due to pneumonia, which can be very dangerous for kids with Batten Disease. Insurance initially denied her hospital stay, calling it medically unnecessary. Appeals thankfully worked, but it was not fun coming home to a bill for like $600K+.

For my Seattle darlings - aqi is at 144, be mindful of outside activities and consider throwing on some air filters if you have them.

Nice to see a summary of the latest in Batten Disease research via @battenpsdl.bsky.social and his colleagues! The better we understand these horrendous and fatal diseases, the sooner we can develop treatments and cures!

If I won the lottery, I wouldn’t announce it. But there would be signs. And those signs would be a bunch of rare disease researchers getting funding and whatever equipment they needed.
