At least in Shelby, the Court pretended there was a backstop. They assured us that, even if they were wrong, at least Sec 2 was there to step into the breach. Sec 2 is now gone. Destroyed using facts that didn't make sense 13 years ago, and don't make sense today.

People should consider that a consensus around treating diversity as “bullshit” contributed to an environment in which the court is comfortable doing this politically. Maybe.

I am not being hyperbolic. Our insistence on segregating our histories, in encapsulating the struggle for voting/civil rights as a Black struggle and not an American one, has helped bring us to this moment. We did not have representative democracy until 1965. W/o the VRA, it is unlikely to survive.

We must understand that the Voting Rights Act was not merely about ensuring Black Americans rights, it was about democratizing America. This ruling is not just a decimation of Black rights and Black Americans’ ability to have representation, it is a fatal blow to multiracial democracy.
