I have a workshop submission due at the end of this week. Only 7 pages, so it's light work, but I've written only 1 short story since the semester ended in April. Diving back in after a break always feels like agony, these hinges are creaky.

I once had a prof who would ask for assignments in 2 phases: a rough and final draft. On one of my final submissions, I forgot to take "rough draft" out of my title. Because I literally didn't change anything. He basically highlighted it and went "lol". Still got 100% though. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Why would I try?

Professors spend so much effort addressing AI that they don't have the bandwidth for students who perform above a certain level, usually the bare minimum. Once you can do a decent enough job without cheating, no one cares about helping you improve. Actual excellence isn't even a goal anymore.

Nevermind the demoralizing effect when strong, committed students watch institutions coddle adults actively choosing to cheat. The number of brilliant students I've watched slowly stop giving a shit because their program caters to the lowest common denominator.

But of course, if you give a student a zero for using AI, you run the risk of losing their tuition dollars when they realize they can't hack their way through a degree. God forbid we prioritize academic integrity/excellence and shy away from turning our institutions into diploma mills.

Don't even get me started on the way Canadian institutions prioritize non-policing methods of addressing AI. The syllabus EXPLICITLY states that AI use is unacceptable and will result in a plagiarism penalty. Then they catch it and spend 90% of their efforts trying to avoid making them feel bad.

So many post-secondary educators have resorted to in-class, handwritten assignments. I had one professor refuse to give the assignment instructions until every device in the room was put away. How much lecture/theory time can you offer if students can't be trusted to do homework without cheating?

I cannot tell you how grim the AI in higher ed situation is. Many of the students have completely surrendered to letting AI do their homework, badly, I might add. How do you fix this? Truly, what the hell do we do, beyond what grading can address, which isn't a solution?
