Yesterday I joined campaigners from @dignityindying.org.uk in support of the Assisted Dying Bill, which has been unreasonably blocked from progressing by a handful of unelected Peers. The majority of MPs and the public support this Bill - the govt must ensure it returns after the King's Speech.

The assisted dying bill is set to fall - not for lack of support, but because opponents in the Lords are blocking it. Defying the will of Parliament & the public. I joined MPs & campaigners at Downing Street to demand the Government give the issue the time it deserves next Parliamentary session.

I was outside parliament today protesting because the House of Lords has blocked the Assisted Dying Bill. Not blocked by a democratic vote, it was systematically talked to death by a small group of unelected politicians.

We could not be clearer. This is an egregious and undemocratic filibuster of the Assisted Dying Bill. No matter what metric is used, the evidence shows that opponents of the Bill, who will never support it and never be satisfied with any safeguard, have deliberately run down the clock.

For all those opposing the bill over inequality: right now, wealthier people are able to travel for a dignified death, others aren't (and even they have to do so without their loved ones, as they could be prosecuted). Stop placing hypothetical suffering over present, actual suffering, please.

Today the House of Lords resumes debate on the Assisted Dying Bill... but it’s going nowhere. As Baroness Murphy points out, the whole exercise is becoming irrelevant: peers have talked for so long that they never even reach a vote on the Bill.

By my count, 22 MSPs who voted against assisted dying will not seek re-election. Labour and Tory MSPs who voted most heavily against are potentially facing pretty bad election results. Lib Dems and Scot Greens, overwhelmingly in favour, are likely to make gains. There is hope.
