Lone Wolf v. Hitchcock is one of the worst SCOTUS decisions no one knows about. Not only did the Court UNANIMOUSLY rule against the Kiowa (and the other two Nations Lone Wolf represented), they did so by holding that the US government had plenary power over Indigenous people.

So Lone Wolf, the chief of Kiowa Nation, sued to block the law, arguing (correctly under both the law and basic morality) that the federal government could not unilaterally change the terms of a treaty decades after the fact. The case went to SCOTUS, and in 1903, the Court found *against* him.

Ordinarily, treaties with other sovereigns (like Indigenous nations) are the law of the land. But Congress passed a new law that effectively and unilaterally changed the Medicine Lodge Treaty to let Congress give two million acres of Indigenous land to white settlers.

Among those guarantees was the territorial integrity of the reservation to which the Kiowa were effectively forcibly removed. Of course, manifest destiny continued its white supremacist western march, and by 1892, Congress wanted to take away the reservation from the Kiowa.

In 1867, the Kiowa Nation and the United States entered into the "Medicine Lodge" treaty. This treaty was effectively forced upon the Kiowa at gunpoint, and was itself only finalized after the US had reneged on multiple previous agreements. Still, the treaty guaranteed certain things to the Kiowa.
