When ChatGPT first took off this was the use case that confused me the most. People said they “only” used it to write “first drafts.” That’s the most important draft! That’s the thinking part!

Confused writing is usually a symptom of confused thinking. As we struggle to clarify writing, we clarify our thoughts. AI writing aids rob us of that struggle, leaving clean-looking text and thoughts still confused for lack of inspection. Writing is not just a product; it is a diagnostic tool.

It is astounding how much time I spent declining genAI services right now. No, I don't want you to summarize this novel for me. No, I don't want you to compose a message to my mom. No, I don't want you to create a picture for me. Fuck. Off.

An abbreviation (ABB) in a journal article (JA) or Grant Application (GA) is rarely worth the words it saves. Every ABB requires cognitive resources (CR) and at my age by the time I'm halfway through a JA or GA I no longer have the CR to remember what your ABB stood for.

I truly don’t think even the most well-meaning, informed men understand how many of the women in their lives have been sexually assaulted or abused, often by multiple men, and often by men they know. The stories women share with each other privately would shock them to their core.

If you want a weird but true fact to talk about: Dexter Holland, lead singer of The Offspring, was instrumental in this. His doctorial thesis in molecular biology was sequencing mRNA in HIV. The paper was also heavily cited in creating the COVID-19 vaccine.

CIHR rant here: our panel funded 6 (!!) out of 42 applications. That is only 14% success rate. That is as bad as the worst of times. So much good science left unfunded, labs closing, skilled workers let go. Without a $$ infusion, the Canadian research ecosystem is never going to survive and thrive.

What I would say is that the music is professional, at a distance it sounds like well recorded, professional music. But it lacks the indefinable frailty that makes art magical, the human bit. Until AI can have its heart broken, or get a panic attack then it cant achieve this
