Been thinking about why I loved Rakesfall so much. It isn't just how hallucinatory it is, or how meta it is, or weird. It's because of its mythic aspect. It's not just a confrontation of how myth can be used for power, but the mythic is alive and concurrent in it. A lot of modern fantasy lacks that.

I'm so pleased to see quite a few people recommend RAKESFALL in response to this. Unsurprisingly this is my favourite kind of book—the kind of book which is normally recommended with caveats like "this book is not for everybody"

I quite like the books that drop you in the deep end. A good book that does will slowly start to help you make the connections a recent one that worked for me was Rakesfall

On literary culture and state censorship more generally: a writer I know went to prison for four months (and risked a ten-year sentence) because he would not back down over a freedom of speech issue. That freedom is not "given" to us. It exists only as we take it, only as far as we fight to keep it.

The censorship will continue until free speech improves

yup. people need to be recognising the elite / gatekeeper liberals for what they are--cryptofascist wreckers there to claim the space where opposition would occur within the discourse & replace it with submission. the alarm needs to be raised over this threat as much as over the overt fascists.

another reason Dems can't build an antifascist coalition is because they're already part of the fascist coalition. This is an incredibly common pattern for the second party in a late capitalist two-party system, which always seem to simply become a racheting engine of fascism with two factions
